    Default Possible Flycatcher

Please help identify the attached capture taken today in Naples FL. I believe it has the general shape and coloration of one of the flycatcher species but I can't match up the dark line between the beak and the eye as well as the eye color.

    Thanks.

Hi Rich. This is a Northern Mockingbird.

Rich, Although superficially like a flycatcher this bird shows the classic features of a mockingbird. The most striking feature is the long tail. Also note the white patch on the wing and the decurved bill.

    Rich,

Just for the sake of an exercise,
I think it is usefull to get a field guide (Sibley etc)
and try to answer for yourself:

1 Why this is not Bahama Mockingbird ? (possible in FL)

2 Imagine you had no idea where the photo was taken,
Why this is not Towsend's Solitaire?

    Cheers,

Yes a selection of good field guides is a must IMO and Sibley, Kaufman and Peterson plus others are all part of my library.

Townsend's Solitaire would have a white eye ring and appear more overall gray on the breast.
