I like the soft light, plumes, and eye contact. Maybe a bit more sharpening

    Aidan and Jeff,

Image was made on a windy day. You can see the neck feathers and black plumes on the head flying all around due to wind. Image was shot at 1/640 of second and not quite enough to freeze very fine feather movement on neck. If i sharpen much more, it will not look natural in my opinion. I am trying to keep whole story intact.

    Hi Sid

Exposure is spot on. Placement of the eye, head feathers and neck feathers in the frame, makes for a very pleasing composition.

Nice composition, perhaps more DOF would have worked here as it seems sharper on the breast feathers than the face.

    Martin,
720mm (500mm+1.4x) @ f5.6 with subject distance of 90feet(approximately) will yield a DOF of 1feet. This is more than enough DOF for a great blue.

You are comparing fine feathers on head with bigger plumes on neck. Of course they will look sharper.

Intent of the image is to show a great blue heron with breeding plumage in wind.

Hi Sid, Do some selective sharpening on the eye and people will not no longer comment on sharpness:) Really lioke the comp and the breeding feathers floating in the wind
