Default EOS 40D/7D: different sharpness in LR2: why?

    Hello,

I hope this is not a stupid question.

When I open my EOS 40D images in LR2 at 100% LR2 shows the images and they look a bit soft first. Then LR renders a higher quality preview and the image looks sharper.
With the 7D, the higher quality preview does not look much sharper.

    Why is that?
Don't get me wrong. I do not want to complain about the 7D. I love that thing. And I read the threads on DPP giving better results for the 7D than LR2.
I just want to understand what exactly is going on here and why?
People have asked me that question before and I couldn't fully answer it, so I am asking here.
I use exactly the same settings for both cameras in LR2.

    thanks for your answers!

    Markus

P.S. The images I compared were all shot at ISO 160, shutter speeds faster than 1/1.600 and proper long lens technique using a EF 4/500L (which is one of Canon's best lenses). There is no back/front focus with any camera.

    Markus,
One reason may be in older camera raw files, only 1/2 resolution jpegs were stored. In the 5DII, a full resolution jpeg is reportedly stored. Ii may also be full res in the 7D. If so, then when the quick view comes up in the 40, it is the 1/2 res jpeg and it takes a little time to generate a full resolution preview from the raw file. When the 7D preview come up, it is from the full res jpeg. Also, the older cameras, which tended to have larger pixels, use more aggressive blur filters, making images appear less sharp. In cameras like the 5DII and 7D, the blur filter is not as strong, helping apparent sharpness at the risk of moire patterns. And finally, with faster processors, better raw conversion can be done in camera to generate a better jpeg (The jpegs out of my 5DII are very impressive, for example).

    Markus,
No idea about your problem. I have used 40D in the past. They look fine in Lightroom 2 (and 2.6). Similarly, my 1D Mark IV files also look fine when imported into lightroom. Just that it takes sometime for the preview to load. The 7D files should also take more time to open as compared to your 40D files.

In the white paper, canon has mentioned that because of the larger resolution of the files of Mark IV, they may appear less sharp when viewed from the same viewing distance in the monitor. So one needs to use higher shutter speeds. I hope that is not the case, as you have mentioned using 1/1600 shutter speeds.

    Cheers,

    Markus;

I have read (somewhere on line) that the 7D has a stronger anti-aliasing filter then previous camera's and therefore needs stronger sharpening during Post Processing. This would effect the appearance when first opened, but is dealt with later during PP.
