    Default Carolina Wren in snow

    D90; 80-400 VR @ 400mm. ISO 500. f/7.1 @ 1/500s. Matrix metering @ +1.3 EV. HH.

Wren was sitting on a branch stuck in a snowbank outside my back door, during a snow flurry the other day. Cropped about 50%. Slight adjustments in levels and curves. Cloned out one OOF branch. Might have wished for a bit of a head turn; took multiple frames in different poses and all seem to have the same HA. Comments appreciated.

    Bill:

The snow on the branch helps tell the story here. You have mentioned the head angle concern. Maddening sometimes when they won't turn that last fraction towards you!

I think the bird could go 1/4 - 1/3 of a stop brighter, and I might consider a bit more sharpening on the head

I think the crop is hurting your IQ a bit. You are right in the sweet spot for that lens however at f/7.1

    Cheers

Lovely birdie. F/13 to get feet and tail in focus too. Head does not bother me at all, it is a jaunty flick and sharp eye it is laying on you.

Thanks Randy. Here he is again, a bit brighter and with some sharpening of the head. I think I've pushed the sharpening as far as I can now, maybe too far; I believe the focus point was on the shoulder rather than the eye. I've been trying to shoot this lens at 7.1 when I can, and usually back off of full zoom to around 370mm for better results; don't know why I shot this at 400mm, or whether it made any difference. Thanks for the helpful comments.

Hi Bill, good job with the repost; I like the alert pose and the bit of snow and would add some canvas as for me, it's a bit tight.
