    Default Sharpie

    First post here.

I had seen this shy female around where I shoot woodpeckers for over a year but couldn't get a clear shot from bushes of her until now when she landed on this rebar. Canon 1D3, 500/4L + EF 1.4x II @ f9.

    Hi Gene,

Wow, for your first post, you picked a winner! What a great shot! It's so hard to capture these birds without a bunch of trees around (for me, anyway). Love the pose, background, and sharp detail.

Big welcome to BPN and congrats on a wonderful first post!
Beautiful bird, excellent exposure and detail, great pose, and killer background.

I'm sure the perch will not be to everyone's taste but I actually like the curved shape.
I like the pose but I think it makes for a tricky composition.
I'm thinking I might prefer the bird to be shifted right a bit in the frame so that the eye is actually dead center horizontally.

Looking forward to seeing some of those Woodpecker images!

Ditto Mike's comments....you've made the best of a butt-ugly perch but the bird is so nice I don't mind a bit.

Yes welcome Gene! The image shows the bird off nicely again a beautiful background. The head angle you have is pretty nice but IMO it would have been better of the bird was looking up a bit more, increasing the eye contact. You could go some way to accomplishing this with some eye work. In the repost, I dodged the whole eye, then selectively the shadow in the top corner of the eye and surrounding area as well as the eye highlights, then burned the pupil to darken back to what it was. It's all pretty subtle but has the effect of opening up the eye. Let me know what you think.

I agree with Mikes comments on composition.

Beautifully captured Sharpie. Was going to comment on the eye, but John beat me to it; repost helps. Background is gorgeous. Agree the bird might be shifted slightly to the right. Very nicely done!

Hi thanks for the tips. I will open up t hat eye. It is however almost dead center so I wil take that comment as move it more right.

I do have a number of poses - here is a down-sampled crop with the head even (I know the eye needs some work too :D )

    Cheers,
    Gene
