    Default Reddish egret head shot

Ft. DeSoto - late afternoon. I Like the hair, head angle, and "look" (like arched eyebrows.) Wish the shadow wasn't there.

    Allan:

Nicely exposed in fairly harsh light. Great hair do, looks like an Elvis impersonator somehow.

Might crop a bit from top and right, just personal taste.

    Cheers

Did you try to lighten the shadow? I see a little halo on the red feathers next to it.
Love the hairdo and I think this would also work into a vertical. I don't think we can spare an inch from the top because of the ratio of neg space and bird's length.

    Allan & Fabs:
this is what I was thinking about re: crop. Perhaps a bit tight for your tastes Fabs.

I'm fine with the side, Randy, but I feel the top needs a bit more "air" given how tall the bird is. We are splitting hairs here, just different ways of seeing things (Thank God for that :D imagine how boring the board would be if we all thought the same lol)

I did not lighten the shadow. I was afraid it would not make much of a positive impact and perhaps degrade the image - adding noise or halos.

Randy, I like your crop, especially taking some off the right.

    Fabs:

Appreciate the "splitting hairs" nature of this discussion, but as you know, I really like trying different comps, trying to learn what works. For me, the fact that the birds attention is directed so dramatically towards the lower left hand corner, requires less space on top, than if he had been looking straight ahead or up.

I do very much respect your sense of composition, but am working on my own as well:)

    Cheers

I took a bit off the right but then it seemed too long for my taste so I cropped a tiny bit off the bottom.

Personally I like the shadow as it adds a bit of a dynamic to go along with the windblown look :)

    Crop looks fine.

Subject looks as though it needs a bit of a saturation boost to it or contrast sharpening or something?

Jim, I will look at the shot when I get home and have a calibrated monitor. However, I have oversaturated the red feathers in the past. Perhaps it is a bit warm?
Troy, I like the head angle with the expression in the one eye I see. I am not sure it would have worked if the head was facing forward more, imho.

Allan, it is still a great image, one or both eyes. Loving the bad hair day. LOL.
