I've been a birder for 30 years, mostly in North America. I've also been to Costa Rica & Ecquador birding. I started Photography just resently. I own a Panasonic Lumix FZ 50. I'ts a great little camera but it has its limitations for Bird Photography. I've taken some great Pics with it but I plan to move up to a DSLR - but here it goes: which one?
I'm sure thats a question that is always asked. I've got my eye on the Canon 7D also the Nikon D300s. I realize thats a huge jump from the Panasonic FZ50 to those two cameras I mentioned above. The one thing that I really don't want to do is get into the game of Camera creep, so I'm waiting and gathering as much info from other users as I can. I've read the online reviews, but I'm curious as to whether any of you out there have thoughts.
Can't go wrong with either system !!! Will get lots of reasons why to get one or the other, best to see for yourself and use the one most comfortable with !! ... btw the FZ is a great macro camera .. don't give it up !!!
Welcome to BPN, Dennis! You can't go wrong with either 7D on the Canon side or the D300s on the Nikon side, which would be a great start. As for lenses, for bird photography ideally you would get a 500mm lens and 1.4x TC, but this is of course a real investment. Alternatively a 100-400 zoom lens (Canon) or 200-400 (Nikon) might be a compromise.
Hi Al - Thanks for the quick reply. I'm finding out that my experience with wildlife photographers has been all good. I feel like a BABE IN THE WOODS. Nature photography ain't for the faint hearted I'm finding out.
Your moose photo is wonderful! I can just hear him bellowing!
All the best,
Dennis
