    Tough to pick a favorite bird from my Tanzania tour......toss up between the crowned crane and the lilac breasted roller. Stormy day made for an interesting BG although not too many flight opportunities.

    I really like this bird and agree that the stormy BG lends itself well to this image. Was this initially under exposed as there seems to be a manifestation of what looks like noise particularly in the blacks of the wings ? I also wish I could see more detail in the gold feathers behind his head.

    Thanks Mike....no....not underexposed...but noise did rear it's head in the bright overcast.....and you know something funny....I blurred the crown because I thought it looked over sharpened!

    I love the lines created by the bird in this image. Placement of the bird in the image and background helps make this an appealing photo for me.

    Beautiful subject offset by a great Bg. Love the lines created by the pose and wing position.

    Roman,
    In my trips to Tanzania, I've never seen a crowned crane flying! Congratulations. There seems to be a halo around the bird (sharpening artifact?). I would like to see the crown not blurred.

    I have to agree with Roger, though there is some artifact around the crane from sharpening, the feathers are not quite sharp enough at the same time....

    Great composition, great BG, good colors, and as Mike did, I thought that the shot was underexposed because of the noise, but you say it's not the case. I'm not familiar with Noise Ninja, I would like to see the "before and after" shots to see the difference.

    Good shot!

    Roman;

    Good to see you back on avian. A dramatic sky, great bird and pose. I know you want to keep the story sky, but the bird is too dark for my taste as well.

    I am not sure why you got so much noise at that ISO and that camera, since you didn't underexpose. Could you expand on your thoughts there? I am not sure why the bright overcast would cause a problem if the bird was exposed for the ambient light level?

    Cheers

    Thanks all! It appears I am getting a bit sloppy in my PP'ing work! Randy.....I use manual exposure and generally go for the whites (no blinkies) so the bright overcast helped me there but I will double check the histogram (tiff shows no clipping) to see if I added exposure during raw conversion.
