    Default Yellow-crowned night heron

This one is from last summer. I'd have preferred the head turned slightly towards me but he flew off. I have some others with better head angles but they dont show off the crest so nicely. Sorry abt the large size.

40D. 300f/4 non-IS and 1.4x. iso320. f/8. 1/125. tripod. My sharpening technique was not so good then. In hindsight, I think the body can use a little more sharpening. Also needs some lightening. Since it is one of my favourite images, I am planning to re-process the old file...I'll take all the inputs and then do it.

    Thx for looking and critique-ing.

As aesthetically pleasing as this shot is, Kaustubh, I would never allow it where one had to scroll to see it in its entirety. This is in part why I greatly disfavor portrait wildlife shots. I'll go out of my way to make them landscape.

Bob, as I said before, I apologize for the large size. I copied the image location from my photo.net site.

I like the soft light, sharpness and setting and would crop a bit off the top since the upper part is a bit darker anyway. I agree on the head turn.

Very nice clean image. I don't find the size a problem, however a bit off the bottom would also work for me. A bit of a head turn would have been great. Dave

My personal take is if your subject is taller than wider portrait orientation is fine.

I really like the nice soft light on the bird. While not ideal the HA works fine here. I might tone down the greens as so not to fight for your attention with the heron.

Size is no issue on a large monitor, looks great to me. Agree about sharpening on the body, not much just a shade more definition in the wing patterns. I like this very much, head angle is fine by me.

The bird looks very good, the HA is what it is, crop is good.
Agree about toning down or even de-saturating the greens a bit.
Other than that it is very nice shot.

Good low perspective Kaustubh, and I like the show of the crest. Good sharp detail on the head and beak, and I would maybe selectively sharpen the body a tad more. I actually like the greens of the BG.
