This Polar bear to me, gave the feeling of being 'aloof', all he was doing was sniffing the air:)

BTW The slight halo around the nose is in the original and not an artifact from masking or sharpening.

    Steve,

I believe he is sniffing the air to decern your location for an attack :).

I like the detail in the snow around the bear. This light really accentuated that and created an interesting look at his feet. Cropping vertical good choice with equal room left and right due to the bear's positioning works well. No merge at the nose with the broken ice in the BG. Just right for my tastes.

    Hi Steve,
As Robert mentioned.....nice job avoiding a merge with the snout and ice. Good details throughout. I may prefer slightly more light in the chest/lower body....but nicely handled nevertheless!

Steve, I know what he was doing! Do you think the white around the nose maybe snow?

I guess Al we will all have to wait for Ken's answer, as I have no idea. From my recollection he was sniffing the air, as both vessel & occupancies were offering new and exciting smells.

When I noticed that I thought, no Steve wouldn't have let that slip through! ;).
Perhaps some moisture/condensation from all the sniffing?
Like the comp here, details/exp in the fur are excellent as well as the floating ice he's on.

Vertical presentation and position in frame look good. Exposure and detail are spot on for my taste (I prefer a little darker image than most). Well done. TFS

Steve, your comp works well, with the central placement. I like the fur detail on the bear, and its always great to capture a behavioural shot. Good job on the BG too. Well captured.

For those who have waited with baited breath, it is most probable that the bear is looking up at the rigging, which generally makes quite a lot of noise, other than that maybe he was admiring somebody in the crow's nest ( I will say no more).

Would love to see these Polar bears sometime. I like the vertical composition. Is it full frame? I would have tried for more space at the top, however, there is broken ice at the top as well as bottom. So that kind of frames the bear. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent behavioral images, pleasing compo and what's not to like?
I see a small sharpening halo around his nose tip.
I'm surprised no one saw it. Maybe it's not there???

Hi Fabs, it's not through sharpening. I question that in my original posting, but its in the original RAW file which is set to Faithful, so what it is, I have no idea, but it certainly isn't a sharpening halo. ;)

    Thanks
    Steve :)

    Could it be back light?
ACR (if it's what you used) has a default sharpening that can be turned to preview only, but I don't think it would be strong enough to create a halo.
I think I figured it out, you could probably see it better in the bigger file, it's his own fur!

    Hi Fabs

The settings in 'Faithful' is O across all sectors of the RAW file, NO added input when shot, (although any pre-settings can be reverted back to 0 in Canon's software). I use Canon's DPP, as this gives the most truest representation to the original and is dedicated to Canon cameras and IMHO gives a more realistic image. Therefore, I have no idea what it is, and am at a loss?
