This rail is common in NZ, Aus and South Africa. We call them Pukeko here, anyone know the common English name? Latin Porphyrio porphyrio. Overcast day hence the high ISO. No cropping has been done, I wish for more room on both sides and bottom. After re-sizing for the web it somehow doesn't look as sharp as the original :( Being vertical I had to downsize quite considerably.

The cutest of poses and neat bird, but you needed more shutter speed to freeze the action or it may be a matter of DOF, critical focus elsewhere. If it's OK with your p/p ethics, you can try and remove the OOF light blades of grass in the right.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Martin,
Apparent sharpness already mentioned by you and Fabs.....my guess is leaning towards DOF as 1/640 seems plenty fast enough for the action. I agree with Fabs on the BG.....if OK with such things minimizing those grasses and brighter areas as a distraction will help bring this up another level.
English name is Purple Swamphen. It used to be called Purple Gallinule, but name caused confusion with the North American species of the same name. Great bird full of character.
