Would you switch from your Canon?
Also based on my calculations for Nikon to match the FL & reach of a 1D4 + 800 with the D3S they would need to have a 1,383.8mm lens at f/5.6. To put things into context the 1200mm f/5.6L is 16.5kg. :)

But what if you couple with a D300s with 1.5 factor; at lower ISOs, the D300s has proved to be just as good IQ
You will have to have multiple mortgauge and selling lot of assets to buy that one from Nikon if they make :p
I can imagine Nikon offering such a lens in the future but I doubt Canon photographers would switch as there already is such a lens for Canon. I wouldn't.
I think a 5.6/200-600 VR or 4/200-500 VR would make more people think about switching.

No I will stick with my 800 Sigma HSM EX DG in nikon fit thanks.
Phil.
If Nikon offered the 800 and Canon didn't then I would have picked up a D300 to go along with the Nikon 800; that purchase would have been an addition ... I definitely would not have switched camps because the 70-200 f/4 IS, 100-400, and 400 f/5.6 all work great on my 50D bodies (I'm a very happy camper).
If OTOH both Nikon and Canon offered the 800 then I would have based my purchasing decision on predicted MTF performance and street price (taking into account what Nikon's five year warranty is worth to "me").

I certainly agree with your thought about the 200-600 f/5.6 VR as representing something to lust for; I'd purchase one in a heartbeat along with a D300 but it would only be an addition to the bag and in no way entice me to change from Canon to Nikon.

It would probably sell for the price of a whole Canon system...
