Default My first post - bittern in flight

    Hi all,

This is my first post and I wanted to know if you think it is sharp or not, as well as any other comments. :)
It is a bittern in flight, taken in London last week. It is 70% of the original shot (I took a bit off the right and bottom to give a better composition).

Welcome, Oscar. NIce opportunity to catch a bittern in flight and I like the colours. I think a pano crop to remove the top of the bank would be good. I can't tell at this resolution if it's sharp. 1/160s with a 500 on a 1.5x body - 750mm equivalent focal length is a big ask and even if plane of focus is on the bittern, which I suspect it is, there is the issue of motion blur.

Tony, this was only one of two shots that were sharp out of eleven due to the camera locking onto dark [arts of the bird and so exposing for 1/50th of a second. Do you think that the tops of the reeds are distracting?
Thanks for your comments - it was a grab shot really - i was sitting in a hide and didn't have much time to lock on. The light wasn't great either...

Welcome again! Very nice first post, I like the wide crop and wing position. At this size, it is really hard to see if the bird is sharp but probably not due to the low shutter speed. If it were mine, I might crop some off the top since the house in the BG is a bit distracting and I might blur the reeds a bit. Keep them coming!

I fixed the link. I used the deviantart one, clicked on the small image to make it bigger and then right-clicked and copied the image address before pasting it here. Let me know if you have questions!
