Took the liberty (hope you don't mind) of using the S/H tool and selective exposure adjustments using layers in CS3 to bring out more eye & right side face detail and tone down some hot bits around the ears, neck & muzzle Hilary.
I think this is a bit of an improvement on this fine side lit image. Always good to get these guys out in the open.

Thanks Marc, really like the repost. All good suggestions and I'm grateful for your efforts.
Well captured Hilary, and good improvements, Marc. I would like to have such a good sighting of a serval. Would have liked a sliver more space on the RHS if any available (or if you feel to extend canvas a tad).
I like the portrait and the colors. I like the way the shadow tool opened up the eyes.
Hilary,
Great to see one of these in daylight. extremely rare! I was lucky a few years ago also in the Mara!
I think you could have done without the 1.4X, Marc's repost improves the image greatly.
one I still need in my portfolio. Marc's repost ticks all the boxes I noted on the OP. Seems like everyone on this forum went to Kenya/Tanzania early this year
Betsy, I have more space on the right so I'll look at a re-crop.
Dan, thanks for the comments. I agree totally.
Ken, I take your point regarding the 1.4x however, that morning we were inundated with sightings and I found that I was getting what I could with both cameras. For the serval, I didn't know how long we would have the sighting before the cat disappeared so I just got what I could. I have other images taken with the 40D with the 70-200 but I particularly liked this head shot.
Morkel, luckily I didn't see too many of the visitors. It was very quiet! :D
