I thought the texture of the tree would add a lot to the picture and the sky that morning made for a perfect BG

Typical intense heron stare, Ken. I might crop from left and add to the right to decentre the bird and give it a little more room to look into. Speck above the bill (?bug ?dust) would be worth removing. Sky colour/saturation looks a bit unnatural to me but I am on an uncalibrated monitor. A bit of NR on the sky would also be an option.

    Ken,

If I understand right, your objective is to show a green heron sitting on a tree stump. You did a pretty good job in achieving your objective.

Like the way your composed this image with a bulls eye composition. Nice details and great background. Here are few things that can make this image much better IMO.

    1. Heron is looking some where and not generating any interest to viewer. A nice eye contact with head angle will improve this image a lot.

    2. Not a big fan of square crop. I would crop a bit from both left and right and make it a vertical composition.

    3. Tree is bigger in size compared to subject and little over powering. I would prefer a little smaller perch.

    Keep them coming.

Hi Ken, in this image i feel my eye is being drawn to the very "Pronunced" Tree Stomp.
Look forward to seeing you out at Waco.
