We live in California near Yosemite, do a little casual Bird feeding. Lately we are having problems with Woodpeckers. The raid the feeder and pull all the food out. Any thoughts on how to stop this behavior?
Maybe you could provide something that they like to eat in their own feeder. Most woodpeckers like insects and nuts. You could buy some prepackaged suet that is primarily for woodpeckers and a suet feeder. That would be a pretty inexpensive test to see if it would keep them off of your other feeders.
This is how I keep the squirrels off of my bird feeders. I supply them with easy to reach pumpkin seed and corn. It usually works pretty well.
Acorn Woodpeckers like to cache food in the shells, so maybe some pecans in the shells might keep them busy. 'Course, they might peck holes in your house or trees for the caches. Not too good.
Good advice from Patti. I see the mix you are using Gary. I find that finches will sort through a mix like this and high-grade the black oil seed, thus wasting everything else. Maybe the woodpeckers are doing the same thing?
Wish I had Acorn WP coming to my feeder- they can take all the see I've got!!!
