Last summer i was fortunate enough to be able to travel to a puffin colony about 600kms from my home in Newfoundland. a friend of mine told me to be patient and wait for the winds to change to a southeast direction. when that happens the puffins will land on the headland. i had no idea just how right he was!
here's my 500VR on tripod looking like complete overkill! i ended up shooting a ton with just my 70-200 and 300mm f4 af-s.
this location is close to Cape Bonavista. i've spent considerable time in Bonavista and have never seen the puffins anywhere near this close. both my mother and grandmother were born there. after my daughter was born i wanted to bring her to Bonavista to see where grandma and great grandma where from.
just to the south east of the town of Bonavista there is a little town called Elliston . if you can find the beach in Elliston you are almost there. :)
be patient. i watched two photographers walk away on two consecutive days. both times the puffins arrived withing ten minutes of them leaving, once in the sweetest of last light.
