    Yellowstone NP, 2010

I have always been very impressed with the quality of images produced by Capture One software. Being on the beta support team I received this morning the latest Pro 5.1 software for review. WOW! is an understatement. The programs algorithms are superb... extracting every subtle detail from MY RAW files, including my new Matk IV. And, the images now load rocket fast.

The image posted above has only been sharpened for web and converted to sRGB in CS4.

    1D Mark IV, 600mm,
    Manual (spot plus 2 2/3 EV off bright snow), 1/800 @ f11, ISO 400
    Post-production-Capture One Pro 5.1 beta, CS4

See you where there is light, or at the computer

Would be nice to see it at a higher resolution. I am sure the details must be amazing. Beautiful shot.

    I'll ask!

You Coyote in snow was processed with LR and CS4 - it appears to have a bit of a blue-grey cast when compared to this Coyote processed with C1Pro and CS4.

What did you do differently in C1Pro that you didn't do with LR and could you have done the same with LR?

Was the final processing in CS4 any different for the two images?

You seem to be suggesting that C1Pro gives more bounce for the buck without saying so! ;)

My memory of your images - I enjoy them over and over - is that this is perhaps the first time you have mentioned C1 and all of your stuff is generally processed with LR. Even though you are on the beta team, is this a new approach for you?

You know I like to ask the fun questions!

BTW, I definitely like the C1Pro image better than the LR image - it seems more natural and the snow is snow white instead of snow blue-grey.

As per my text in the coyote in snow post ...the cool color cast was left in by choice. I could have made the color temp the same in both images if desired.

    See above

Not much, except for the degree of output sharpening.

C1 algorithms have always done an exemplary job of extracting detail on par if not better than any other RAW conversion software I have used.

Even though you are on the beta team, is this a new approach for you? I have been an advocate of C1 since I first used the program when going digital, to the point that C1 co-sponsored me in international adv and more for quite a few years. I have always remained on the beta team. C1 fell well behind with camera profiles, support, data basing, and had a very poor business model for quite a while. It was in my favor to learn, use, and teach what the majority of photographers were using, that being LR2 and LR3 beta. I still think Lightroom is a better all encompassing program for RAW conversion and data maintenance, however the images produced by C1 have always and continue to be among the highest quality available. Capture NX is also a killer RAW converter for Nikon users, but the interface still has much to be desired. C1 is expensive if you are only going to use it to develop your RAW images...but the quality is now even more astonishing.

You know I like to ask the fun questions!

I can make an image similar in color, tonality, etc with most programs. It is the overall resolving power of C1 to extract every subtle nuance of detail from a RAW file that I find compelling.

Bottom line ... it still comes down to the nut behind the wheel and how many crayons you have in your box ;)

    Best,

    Chas

    Very nice Chas,

I like the feel of this image. Thanks for your notes on C1Pro, maybe now is the time for me to change away from Bridge.

Love the comp and clean, snowy background. Great detail in the coyote as well.
