Shooting into sky I find tricky so as to get good underwng detail.
Best ways to do this well every time, welcomed.
For some reason the preview version appears very flat compared to the image on my calibrated Eizo monitor. Why?
Hi Denis No mystery as to why is tricky for under-wing detail You are shooting the shaded side of the bird More often than not it will be under exposed ... then you open up a bit and the dark turns into a no detail lighter color
Several things to do The best is to shoot over a sandy beach Can also use flash but difficult to get it to work at the distance Your best bet is to open up at least one stop On very heavy overcast days we shoot at 2 2/3 over It will blow the sky totally but will give excellent details to the underside !!!
I did a bit of processing on the image. In Levels I lightened it up because I was going to do a curves next. In curves I used the PSCS3 preset "Medium Contrast". I then did a local contrast enhancement using unsharp mask with amount at 20 and radius at 60 and threshold at 0.
