Just back from my winter Yellowstone tour and the 1st real test of the new 7D. So far I'm pretty impressed with the new camera. When this raven landed next to our snowcoach I handheld the 500mm...

Great bird, excellent detail, I like the BG too.
The eye-contact and expression are really good.
I think I see halo around the beak, due to sharpening?
On my monitor the plumage has just a bit of bluish cast.
    Excellent portrait in any case.

No it's on the raw file as well, I thinks it's light reflected off the windshield of the vehicle the raven is standing on...

Interesting, I wonder if it can be toned down or eliminated, I guess it's worth trying.

Here's the unsharpened image. Basically it's acting as backlight reflecting off the windshield...

Yes, I don't mind the upper one, but the lower one I think looks bit unnatural.

Hi guys, interesting reflection from the vehicle, to cause the "colour cast" Hope you dont mind, I tried my hand at bringing it back to a more natural black colour. Sorry, couldnt resist. Desaturated the blues, and added some black in selective colour.

No problem Stuart... The raven was perched on a yellow snowcoach so all kind of wierdness was going on with my color balance. This looks real good.....

Amazing detail, clean background! So glad you liked the 7D! It does have a bluish cast on my monitor as well.

I have photographed many Raven here in the UK, they invariably have a certain amount of 'blue' in the black plumage. The feathers have a slightly glossy black sheen and never a dull matt black, so the original posting would seem to be more realistic rather than the ultra neutral of Stuart's version.

I'm going to chime in because I think Raven do have a lot of blue on their plumage, here's a big crop of one from Cody :) where you can see the natural bluish cast to the black. I'd probably go for something between the orig and the repost.
I was going to ask where you got all that green from the snowcoach :p:D

Neat portrait, with lots of detail. wish I'd been there!

You didn't miss a feather; so very sharp!

I like the original post and I'm guessing that is what you saw with your eye. ;)

Real nice job in capturing an exposure on a tough bird. I've yet to pull off anything this sharp on a Raven!
