    Default Cassowary

Hi all :) I am after some cc for this image, i love how it has turned out. Almost SOOC apart from curves and a small amount of burn on the head where it was a tiny bit blown out.
f5.6, iso 400, 1/250, also any editing is welcome as Im not very good at pp :)
    Thanks!

Hi Jane - love these guys, I assume this is a captive animal, Tried to see them on my trip to far north queensland but lucked out - can be quite dangerous in the wild - can easily kill a man.
I adjusted the crop a little to get rid of some of the distracting BG elements which hopefully brought more focus onto the bird. Selectively sharpened the eye a little.
Good HA and eye contact and exposure looks good.
    Look any better??

Hi Lance, sorry yes captive cassowary at phillip island wildlife park :) I like the crop to the right but I think I think having more of the body in the shot as I love the feathers texture and showing how big the birds body really is.
    Thanks!

Good details in the blacks Jane. Have to agree with Lance that some kind of a crop would be nice. If the BG had been cleaner I might have left it in, but find it a bit distracting. Might lighten the eye and sharpen it a bit. Overall I really like it.

You have the bird sharp with good details, especially on the black feathers. Agree with Lance and Jackie that a tighter crop would improve this image. At first I consider lighten the whole image, but that would change the mood of the image, so might left as it is. Do agree about lighten the eye though.

    Jane,

Greetings. I like the bold composition (ala this thread #7 response). Can't say why but Jackie's crop (& sharpening) with a slight CW rotation works for me.

Looking at it a bit more slightly lifting the darks a bit would bring out the auburn highlight in the breast feathers adding some nice color contrast there.

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Always happy to see somebody try something else other than bird-on-a-stick composition. Congrats ! Like the dramatic lighting !!

The original image has lots of potential, but I really like what Jackie did with her repost. A somewhat unconventional crop that works quite well IMO. A little bit of extra light around the eye makes quite a difference.

Hi Jane This is one of those you can crop in a different number of ways successfully ... and come up with a totally different feeling image.

Particularly like the lighting and overall mood, works !!! For most of these I like the selective sharpening Jackie is talking about, just sharpen what you need which is mostly the face area !!! btw I like shooting captive birds and they can be just as challenging sometimes more since you need come up with a natural bg !!!

Next encounter with this beauty would try something really tight showing just head and some feathers ... btw the tiny blown area I would not worry about, if you do away by compensating in camera might not have enough shadow detail, nailed the exposure !!!

Thanks for all the comments and Jackie I really like that crop as it is still showing the body. Photographing captive animals has made me so aware of the background, it is so hard to get a photo with no wire/anything artificial so getting an image like this made me very happy.
    Thanks again!
