Found this heron fishing in the Dumamish River as the tide was going out. One of the first digital images I took.
Nikon D100 70-300mm at 300mm, iso 200, 1/200 sec at f/5.6, matric metering, Wb auto. on tripod. processed in CS4 cropped 30% est. I liked the moving water behind-- but might be to busy? comments welcome.
I don't mind about the moving water in the background, in fact I think it shows good environment. I feel a bit tight at the bottom, maybe more room so we can feel that the virtual feet is there.
I like the color tones a lot, Craig -- the multitude of gray hues is quite appealing and something not often seen. Capture of the heron is excellent, with perfect focus and exposure.
You suggested a concern about the BG being too busy.
That too was my first impression, but as I studied the image, I came to terms with it as an environmental action portrayal, and a very good one at that. So I have no concerns. :)
With the clarity of oversight, I have to wonder how it would have turned out if your angle of attack had been lower, with the lens on-plane with the bird. Would it have been possible to sit, kneel or lie down from your vantage point?
I do like the image -- and thanks for posting it !
here is the image with a slight crop at bottom.
Yes I could have gotten lower, yet I was a very inexperienced photographer. Didn"t know about all the many different techniques. Thanks for all the suggestions.
I like the image a lot. i like the way the water changes from being in focus in the foreground to being blurred further back. I, along with Thanaboon, would like to see a bit of room at the bottom for the bird's virtual feet.
I like the original capture a lot !!! Might have only placed the bird a little further left and tried working my way so the rock on the right would not be a prominent !!
Good shutter speed for this image, any higher and the water takes a strange frozen look, can experiment with even a little lower particularly when using a tripod !!!
another vote for the original compostion with a small crop off the left. not familar with that camera, but was thinking you could bump the ISO for a little more shutterspeed!!
