    Default Goosander

    Hi

My mkIV arrived this week but th weather has been grim, so it headed forth on its first outing this morning. I decided to head up to a site where I photograph goosander. It was thick fog for the 90 minute drive but fortunately the lake is elevated and was above the fog layer, in sunshine and flat calm. These male birds are a real exposure headache!. Anyway the mkIV performed very well and bascially does what it says on the box :),the only current downside being I only have DPP to process the images with, which I never use, as my favourite Caputre One has not come forth with an update yet.

    Taken with 1DmkIV with 500mm lens at ISO 400 F5.6 -0.7EV at 1/1250s

    Cheers

    Rich:

Lovely bird, nice low shooting angle, sharp, good angle in frame.

It is a bit too dark for my personal taste, maybe 1/2 stop more exposure.

I might consider cropping up a bit form the bottom, perhaps 1/3 up in the free space.

    Cheers

This fantastic image deserves a proper processing - hope you like it...;)

Many thanks Ofer, a great improvement. I must admit I am really struggling with DPP as I have never really used it and so really looking forward to the Capture One update!.

    Cheers

Rich and excellent image all round (details, low angle, head turn, BG). Ofer's exposure adjustment allows the details to shine

Rich, I like the eye level angle, and wondering why you went for such a neg EC.

That's the only way to get the white right. In my repost I didn't touch the white as they are on the edge.

As Ofer said it the only way to hold the whites on these which is very bright down the flanks. Also not helped by the generally dark water caused by the surrounding hills as I was using evaluative metering. They are a problem to photograph as it a fine juggling act between holding the white and trying to get some detail in the blacks, and also trying to get the green head sheen. No negative EV resulted in instant flank burn out.

    Cheers
