    Default You lookin at me?

    Northern Harrier (Cirus cyaneus)

Canon 7D, 400DO, f4.5, 1/500s, ISO 400, M, HH, cropped from 18MP to 6MP. Noise reduction on the background and extra sharpening on the eyes.

At first I was disappointed that the bird appeared only in the lower right corner of the frame, but after looking at the hawk seem to look directly back at me, the image started to grow on me. How does it work for you?

As always, all suggestions and comments welcome.

    Doug:

from a comp. point, I think it works very well.
The image quality however is compromised by noise, and the crop.

The head-on look, soft light, complementing BG and composition look good. Too bad that it is such a big crop, the noise is quite apparent.

I like the head turn and BG but I am not crazy about comp. focus is back on the right wing and there is a lot of noise as a result of sharpening. Not much you can do here.

I ran the raw file thru DPP rather than ACR and then ran Neat Image on the entire image and reduced the crop so the eyes are in the upper right rather than the upper left sweat spot. I'll upload it tomorrow after the 24 hr to see if I'm going in the right direction. Looks better to me in terms of IQ, but I'm not sure I like the crop as well. Later.

I agree with the comments above. Sounds like you have an alternately finished version...you can upload it within this thread for comparision, and additional advice as required...

Thanks, Daniel. Good to know the 24 hr rule doesn't apply to withing thread uploads.

Here's the re-do. I didn't match the color balance between DPP and
    ACR.

Douglas I love the eye contact but the bird's face still seems soft to me in the un-cropped version. I might try some selective sharpening on the face but I'm not sure it will help much.

2 cents more: much of the noise is surely a result of the original being underexposed....

Repost is better for noise but a tough image to work with in general.
