Not looking very Grey in this as a result of rising sun. Taken in Karoo National Park 11th December 2009.

    EOS 1D MkIII

    500mm F4 IS bean-bag

    F6.3, 1/2000, ISO400, EV-0.33

I chose to leave the sky in as to my mind it improves the image.

Not sure I agree with you on this one Ken, the sky BG to my eye looks best left out.
With just the imposing mountain ridge giving a nicer textured BG, making the FG and Rhebok really pop.

I like the original best, I like how it shows the impressive size of the escarpment.
I also like the Karoo habitat shown, well done.

Ken I prefer the original post,as the blue just breaks up the overall colours which are all very close & similar.

BTW Is this cropped? The reason I ask is that it doesn't look that sharp, plus certainly the BG has some noise in it I feel

So we have 3-2 on crop.

Yes it is a crop about 1/3rd of original, I have to confess to forgetting running noise reduction on the BG!

I tried a little more sharpening but it looked to fake!

That is a tough one to call Ken.

I like the sky because it emphasises the scale, but the resulting square format I don't think helps.
The crop loses the impact but produces a more pleasing format / composition.

    I would try a vertical.

having looked at this as few times I am going to change my mind and go for original crop with sky in... gives a better feel ..
having played with a bit in PS would do some levels and a linear contrast in curves and up the red and black channel in selective colour to bring out the shadows and colour of rock in BG.
thats my 2c worth on this lovely image

Very nice habitat shot Ken. Wonderful scenery. Like the OP too. Peter's suggestions may take it up a notch. Nicely done. :)

Good lookback pose Ken, and I like the karoo light. Overall colours look good, and I feel the sky adds to the perspective of the mountains.

This one seems like it could work with a few different options (beauty of digital). The sky being visible gives it a grander, environmental feel. With it gone, it puts more focus on the animal. A vertical comp emphasizes the cliffs in the BG but I think you'd need to keep some sky visible for that to work. How about the original photo for an animalscape?

Steve hit the nail; the choice of environment or emphasis on the rhebok. My first impression on seeing the image was "what a gorgeous place" which a wonderful pose by the rhebok. So the crop does more justice to the critter but overall I favor the big picture of the OP.

I hear what others are saying and there sure are a lot of options here...but I do prefer your OP Ken, just love the wider scene with the blue Karoo sky, the imposing cliffs and the look-back from the Rhebok.

Thanks to everybody for your constructive comments, I still prefer the crop on the OP.

Further tweaks would undoubtedly improve this, and I will hopefully try today.
