    Default GBH on ice

I know GBH shots are a dime a dozen, and this doesn't even have a fish in his beak or a twig for his mate. But I liked the deliberate forward posture. Late afternoon sun was just starting to diffuse behind a low cloud bank. Not sure how to crop. This was shot as vertical, and is essentially full-frame except to remove dead space top and bottom. Subject shape almost seems to call for a square crop which I'm usually not fond of. Suggestions? C&C appreciated.

    Bill"

I think it is pretty cool (no pun intended!). I would be inclined to crop down sig. from the top, add a little bit of canvas to the right, and not worry about it being too square. There is plenty of implied motion based on the pose.

    Nicely exposed too.

Bill, you must have frequent access to these birds because I would be thrilled to get this shot! I like the pose and the reflection of the foot, it really makes the image. I agree with Randy that the top part of the BG is distracting. Nice detail and light on the bird overall.

Ditto Randy's comments. Good job with sharpness and exposure. Love the raised foot too Bill.

I too like the forward walking pose. The reflection at the bottom help telling that the ground is ice so I'm not sure about cropping that out. Agree about cropping out empty space at the top.

Just for fun, might try to add more canvas on the right and make this into a horizontal.

Randy, Julie, Jackie and Thanaboon - Thanks for the helpful suggestion(s). Here's a version where I added canvas to the right (and a tiny bit to the left) to make an 11x14 horizontal format. I agree it helps -- it gives him somewhere to go with his purposeful stride. Appreciate the comments.

Hi Bill, I like the repost with more room and the striding pose. Looks cold out there.
