Sometimes it's good to go either side of the 'norm'.

Firstly, you get the image you want! Then if you have time, pull-out for a wider shot, or perhaps a close-up, a bit of detail, feature, pattern etc. A very cooperative giraffe in Samburu.

Love the details & the composition . The close up works well for me with all the patterns around the eye . TFS

You have an eye for a good image Steve ! ( couldn't resist that sorry....)

The spread of tones works well. Did you try to sharpen the upper eye lashes a little more? With them being over the darker eye they don't appear as sharp as the lower eyelases which contrast with the lighter body colours.

    Cheers

Hi Justin, because they are almost 'matted together', unlike the lower ones which are more sparse and finer, if you mask and sharpen they tend to look odd and a bit 'crunchy'. Also set against the almost oily black of the eye itself, you are relying only on the highlights to give the appearance and distinction.

One more pass in key area only, but I don't really think it has improved anything, however any suggestions welcome.:)

Love it Steve !!! btw not sure what is on the other side of the animal but placing the eye on the right side might have been interesting with the lighter skin tones showing .. not sure if possible .... good eye :)

All the detail in the eye and the wrinkles in the skin is wonderful. Tried something similar a few times but not even got a third of the way to this. You must have been pushing it at f5.6 but just about got away with it! Only nit is the lack of detail around the top corners, but I really like this one.

Looks a little sharper Steve to my eyes & cal monitor.
Very nice detail & lighting also, I have a small reservation regarding the color, to me it's not quite right. The color looks a bit too chocolate? Could just be me?

A different perspective Steve, and it works for me. Great detail around the eye. Have you tried to lighten the eye? I hadnt read Marc's comment regarding the colour, but I agree, I do find it too reddish/brown. Well done for posting something out the norm.
