Hi Randy - Nice action capture and habitat photo. Whites look like they could be toned down a bit using the recovery slider. Were you shooting in Av Mode?

    Randy:

Dave makes a good point here about the whites. They are somewhat overexposed, with very little detail showing. First step would be to pull the recovery slider in ACR all the way to the right to try and get rid of the blinkies. Then a minor reduction in exposure if needed to help further back some detail in the whites. A reconversion of the raw file with less exposure also would work as a starting point, and that would probably be the best starting strategy.

I like the pose, action with fish and water drops. Certainly worth working on it a bit. I might also experiment with different crops to play up the bird. I am sure you want to keep the environment, but might consider various options.

A big welcome to BPN, a great place to learn.

Hi Randy! I just joined and this is my very first response too :) Agreed the whites are blown out, but overall a very nice composition..I really can't add anything that hasn't already been suggested PP except I usually spot meter these burdzz in sunny conditions paying most attention to the whites with SS and AP manually when shooting..just a thought :) My regards to Trempealeau! A beautiful lil town..I used to take my RV there often. I lived in the big city of Stoddard south of there and managed to escape the La Crosse area!

Welcome, Randy. Lovely pose and the prey with droplets is very nice. Focus is good and I like the smooth blue of the water. The exposure is the main issue with the blown whites. Randy Stout's suggestions are great. Paying attention to your histogram at capture to avoid clipping on the right is important. Scott's suggestion of spot metering is an option - metering the whites and adding 2 stops is a good starting point. Looking forward to more of your images.

    Thanks for the comments!

I'll try all of your suggestions. I always use spot metering, and I believe for this picture, I also used a +1 EC.
I'll revisit the original raw file to see what I can do using the recovery slider.

    Thanks again,

    Randy T
