Mark,
I'm not sure it is a trick, and for the photographer, CS4 has pretty much everything you want (CS3 did too for me). It is a lower cost way to get into the higher end software. The upgrade to CS5 would be less than buying the full version, just hope Adobe doesn't do the trick they pulled on CS3 and not put the latest cameras in the raw converter, forcing people to upgrade to CS4. The only other way to get low cost photoshop is to enroll in classes, for example, take a course on photoshop at a local community college and you should be able to get the educational discount version (not sure how much it is these days). I started with an educational version many years ago.
After buying the 1D Mark IV I had to upgrade from CS3 to CS4 because I prefer to work with ACR and found an educational version of CS4 Extended for $179.
I was planning on waiting for CS5 and was not happy that Adobe does not support CS3 anymore, not the way to make friends.
