I posted one of these in Avian so I'll post another (last one) here because its more of a photo of interest than of beauty. So many of my friends and workmates have asked me if the pelicans are swallowing these fish. I've found that a funny question because wild birds don't have a lot of time and energy to just catch fish all day and let them go. But I do have a complete series of a big one going down the gullet for the real skeptics. The fish is a silver carp, one of the Asian carp species that have invaded the Mississippi and are soon likely to be in Lake Michigan.

The pelicans are probably among the few happy about this invasive species.

    Hi Danny:

This picture ROCKS! I love seeing the transluscency of the pouch a its blood vessels. The water droplets are great too. I like how part of the fish is in and part is out. Would have loved to see this in avian.

Thanks everybody. These photos have caused quite a blitz in the aquatic invasive species world! I'm receiving emails and requests from all over the country and beyond. I have to decide next where I will publish them if they don't go in the "Missouri Conservationist." Maybe "Audubon" - that would be nice! I have at least 20 images just like this one but with different fish and different pelicans. It is great to be at the right place at the right time with "Yeti" my 500/4.

Wonderful image, Danny! I can't believe his pouch can hold all that! Amazing...

Way to go Danny! This is great shooting!!

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His mouth can hold more than his belly can,
He can hold in his beak,
    Enough food for a week.
I'm bleeped if I know how the bleep he can!
    :D
