    Default Red-bellied portrait

Canon 1D MkIII, 560mm (Canon 100-400 @ 400m with 1.4x), ISO 3200, 1/250s, f/9, Manual, noise reduction to background, no noise reduction on the bird.

Very poor lighting, just wanted to test this combo at high ISO. Thanks for looking.

Hi Mark. Looks like the noise is well under control. Nice sharp eye and excellent eye contact! Dynamic range is well controlled, as evidenced by the white and black bars. BG is lovely. The red channel looks to be right on the edge but not over-saturated. How much of the image was cropped? Would maybe expect a bit more feather detail but it's not bad at all. The branch is a bit distracting as it does not seem to be the perch and has no logical anchor point. Thanks for sharing!

Really nice noise control for ISO 3200. Agree with a little more sharpening on the subject and the distracting nature of the branch. Nice exposure and BG. Looks like that combo is working very well technically for you

Real nice critique Kerry :) Fully agree !!!

Mark I'm glad you are pushing the ISO, with these type image you are not going to have lots of noise, sharp, well exposed and clean !!! Just desaturate the red a bit and would take some form the right.

... btw there is a thread in Photo gear related to the 100-400 not being sharp :) I have posted one example of the lens with a 1.4X ... might want to include yours over there, its a great example of what the lens is capable using the right technique !!!!

Thank you for the nice feedback guys. This is about a 50% crop. I didn't like the branch either, but I couldn't clone it out and have it still look decent, so I just left it in.

Alfred, I will look for that thread and post this photo on your recommendation, thank you for the high praise! :)

While strong points have been mentioned I am not crazy about the comp, especially the branch. I would just crop tighter and focus on the head only, if there is any detail left in the crown, I would try to sharpen it a bit more. TFS

Do agree on the composition, a tighter crop would benefit. HA and eye contact are dead on.
    congrats

Nice picture, wish branch was not there, be great. Good detail for 1/250 and high ISO.

    Love the BG too!
