Hi Rob. The pose is nice but you've got some serious JPG compression artifacting. The file you uploaded is only 87 KB, well under the limit of 200 KB. Fine feather detail looks kind of coarse, perhaps because of the relatively high ISO on that generation of camera body.

Re-try: How do you determine JPG artifact compression?

The BG in your original post looks very blocky with lots of squares of color visible. It has a digitized look to it.

    Hey Doug,

Thank you for the critique and help on this forum. If not for people like yourself, as a beginner, I would be in a lot greater trouble.

    Hi Rob,

This looks more like a Red-breasted Sapsucker to me. There is too much red for it to be a yellow-bellied.

    Hi Ryan,

It has been confusing looking this one up. Origionally, I thought Red Breasted, but some of the Bird books say all of them are "Yellow breasted" and are of two varities.

I'm lost - I'll take your word for it.

Where their ranges overlap, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and the Red-breasted Sapsucker can interbreed, but this looks like a straight up Red-breasted to me :).

I like the pose, setting, head angle and BG. The repost is a good improvement. I would sharpen the bird some more and maybe increase contrast.

Agree with above, also the image has bluish/purplish cast on my monitor. Also it looks like cone marks at the lower part of the perch maybe? Neat species, I haven't seen before.
