Default Canon 2x TC with 800mm f/5.6 IS lens

I mostly shoot handheld, but used a tripod and Wimberley head to get this manually focused shot of a Northern Shoveler at 2080mm equivalent.

    Canon 1Dmk3 + 800mm f/5.6 IS lens + 2x TC, 1/640s, f/11, ISO 400, EV -0.67

So far, I have been happy with the image quality of my 2x teleconverter.

    Ed,
It appears you have been more successful than I with the combination. I have taken a few photos of eagles on the nest and found them acceptable though not outstanding. In contrast, I've been very pleased with the 1.4 on the 800. I think the biggest problem I have with the 800 and 2x is in seeing sufficiently well in the viewfinder to focus. It's my failure, not the lens + converter. The well-focused photos I took were nice. Unfortunately, my aging eyesight wasn't sufficient for sharp focus on many of the shots.

All of the Canon Super Tele lenses are capable of producing sharp images with a 2X converter if you manage to keep the lens steady.... work on the technique. Hand holding a long lens is not the best of ideas but we all have our own way of shooting.

... btw all those birds have goofy looking eyes, that image is very sharp.

Very nice. Is the image you posted cropped from the original?

Amazing shot. When I use the 800 + Extender 2.0 II I get less than stellar results.

Come on you could have easily shot at ISO800 and added the 1.4 :)

For this shot, I focused manually using Live View zoomed in 5x. It would have been difficult had I tried to focus looking through the viewfinder.

Thanks, Alfred. Yes, technique is everything as even minute vibrations will be magnified at this extreme focal length.

Thanks, Roger. Yes, this image was cropped just a little from the original in order to de-center the duck.

Thanks, Pao. It was a challenge tracking the duck with manual focus.

No doubt. That would have been much easier, especially with autofocus :)
