    Default Axel and the Wave

Part 1: I was on the jetty at Barnegat Light on a sunny and mild afternoon, there was not much wind but the waves were brutal. There were just a few Long-tailed Ducks near the lighthouse and my plan was to photograph sea ducks in flight. I decided to go toward the end of the jetty where I saw more birds and made some images and the waves didn't look too bad. Paul Fusco stayed where the waves were not quite as high, a very smart move in retrospect. :) He made these images of me and was kind enough to let me post them. Thanks for that!

Part 2: Next thing I saw was this huge wave coming at me, you can imagine what I was thinking. :) I only had time to turn around and cover lens and camera with my body. The only things left dry after that were lens and camera.

One of the most important things I learned in my teenage rock-fishing days is to never take your eyes off the sea. With a camera it's probably easier to forget that. I am glad you are fine Axel. No wonder they refer to the ocean as she, unpredictable, cranky and mean. :D (kidding all you girlies)

Looks like you have your rain gear on Axel. You must have been drenched nonetheless. Barnegat looks a bit treacherous.

That would have been a bit unfortunate. :)

Axel, it's a good thing you shoot without a tripod ... the outcome could have been different! :)

    Great action shots, Paul.

Axel You are braver than me I have a healthily regard for the sea and waves have been up on a cliff 50+ feet away from the water and was hit by a rogue wave. You were lucky :)

Half of me wants to say "ARE YOU INSANE?" but the other half knows I would have been right there beside you so I'll just go sit quietly in the corner...;)
