Full frame image, I decided not to crop in order to show the location a little more effectively. I have done a little patching above the head where there was an OOF branch.

I was in a hide at the edge of a copse, we had baited an area for small passerines but I noticed this GSW just on the fringe of the copse.

What a beautiful shot. I love the soft light, the expression and the natural-looking BG. Nice perch, too. Why would you want to crop? If anything, I find it a bit tight, wouldn't mind more of that BG.

    Where was this taken?

Beautiful detail, color and pose. I agree a little room to the left

HI Jonathan, I like the composition as is. The birds head lands right at the rule of thirds which is just about right in my opinion. The diagonal branch is nice. You did well with the reds. The only thing I would suggest is just a little more sharpening. Thanks for sharing.

    Great-looking woodpecker!
I'm assuming this was taken in the UK, all the more reason to visit one day.

I love the composition as is, sweet BG and nice unity between the bird and perch (the way they arc the same way).

Very lovely Jonathan. I like the pose perch, head angle and BG.

I saw one of these beautiful birds in Barmouth, Wales a few years ago but didn't have time to create any images.

Can't get any better definition than this one. Love the sharpness you got on the eye and feathers. Killer BG. I am not too sure about the size of the perch but that's just me. Congrats on a fine image.

I just love Woodpeckers. I might crop a little from the top. Great image. What location did you make this image?
