Default City of Refuge - Big Island - Hawaii

This image was taken at the City of Refuge on the Big Island of Hawaii. This image is of the totems next to the kings residence.

The City of Refuge was a place, on the island, where any person with a criminal offense could take refuge, if they could reach it before being caught. Once there, no one could hurt or harm them in any way. After spending a specified period of time within the area, the person would be free to return to society with a clean slate and face no further punishment for that crime.

It was also the retreat of the king of the island. There are a number of fish ponds and a canoe landing area there. The servants of the king would catch fish and put them into the fish ponds for later consumption by the king and his group. The “convicts” were allowed to fish, but had living areas away from the royal palace retreat area and did not mingle with the royalty.

The modifications included; B&W w/Color Adjustment, Toning (using toning captured from an early 20th century image of my wife’s grandfather. It was a studio image, but in very bad shape when she had me restore it. But the condition added to the effect. I lightened the area, as the original tone area was too dark for this image) and Brightness and Contrast Adjustment.

    Enjoy!

Mark, what an interesting story:) I really like the image and the toning. I think the framing might be a little
    too modern IMHO.

Interesting story; interesting image. The one thing the impacts me as viewer is that the image seems very busy and I am having a hard time deciding what I should be focusing on.

I recognize that place! been there. Nice concept and composition. The only thing I would suggest is to remove the clone marks on the sky.

Mark, The aging looks good. I also like the additional age marks in the sky and the random color splashes add to the look. The image seems rather busy to me as well. But it fits the "theme" I also agree w/ Cheryl regarding the modern frame.
