Following Arthur Grosset's excellent image of a Juan Fernandez Firecrown posted recently in the wild bird section I wanted to post this image of the mainland relative, a male Green-backed Firecrown. This is literally "hand of man" - mine- just after I had rescued the stunned bird from the ground. It had hit a big picture window in a quincho near Puerto Aysen, Chile. Date was 4 December 2003. It was taken with a P&S Nikon 5700- first year I shot digital. No EXIF data. The bird recovered and flew away.

The image of course shows the "fiery" crown of the firecrown. This is totally structural colour. The feathers are darkish grey when not hit my sunlight.

What a cool image. I love the "hand of man"......and in this case the hand of man helped him. That crown is stunning. Amazing the great detail you got from that P&S Nikon.

Great details on the crown. Any news on the fate of the bird?

I kept the bird warm and quiet for a few minutes in my hand. It flew away and seemed fine. Often if you can get to a shocked bird that has just hit a window, you can bring it back.
