A little more studio tom foolery - inspired by the Olympic flame - Saw a thing on tV the other night whilst half awake and inspired tis little creation. You could spend ages playing around with these....;)

    Base image
Incense Smoke - Photographed against Black Background
Lit from the side with a 600W Studio Light with a 36inch softbox attached
    Nikon D3S
    Sigma 150mm Macro - handheld
    Manual exposure
    Manual Focus
    F16
    1/130TH
    3200 ISO
    FullFrame

    Post Processing.
Decided to keep the black BG
Hue/saturation layer - adjusted to give colour in smoke
Selection made using a quick mask and another hue/saturation layer to selectively change the colour
Filter - Defuse/glow with adjustments to feel.

Lots of fun and pretty easy to do.

    Comments welcome.

Outstanding Lance! That sure does look like the Olympic flame. Excellent set up and beatiful clarity and detail. I believe you nailed this one! I really love the placement of the flame in the frame...just perfect!

Lance, Cool effect. I like the slight diagonal placement and the colors rock! Nicely done.

hi jackie - seriously not hard - secret is getting the BG black - dead black 0 0 0 black - that way you can invert the image and get a white BG which can be cool to.

If you can use your flash OFF camera - IE : in a commander mode and have it fire wirelessly from the camera - then this is a piece of cake - all you need to do is position the flash to the side of the smoke (full power) and play around with your exposure and distance (Smoke to BG) and you will have it in no time.

    Lots of fun.
