A big welcome to BPN. You have come to the right place for birds!
Nicely exposed, sharp, good angle in frame, like the feet, interesting background with just enough texture to be interesting, but not distracting. I would have expected you to need more -.EC with this combination of very dark background and light subject. I shoot a D300 also.
The framing is a bit tight in a perfect world for my taste.
I would consider adding a bit of canvas top and to the right.

Not a typical setting for a tern, at least non that I've seen in photographs! Great mood you've attained here. I love how the dark feet just happen to be against a pale area of the BG...how lucky! For me the biggest area of concern is the light area in the ULC. Some careful cloning/patch work should work fine to fill it in. VWD!

The contrast is excellent here. Liked the texture in the BG a lot. good call on the aperture. I can imagine the next frame with the bird landing perfectly on that rock.
Very dramatic image with the white bird against the dark background, I like it a lot. Very good exposure, lots of detail in the whites, nice and sharp. Neat to see the landing gear down. I would love to see more room around it. Well done.

Thank you all for your great tips; here's my re-work, adding a bit more room top and right, and getting rid of the light area in ULC. Lightened the bird just a touch, as well.
Randy, I would have thought I'd need more -EC as well, as I normally shoot -2/3. For some reason, this was working here; maybe the bright reflections off the wet rocks. I did get several shots with blown out sections.
