Well, maybe if some fair maiden dare kiss it! Just needed to share this one, a Cane Toad gutsing itself on flying ants that were attracted to the outside light. The 'grab' happens in a split second so it was a matter of pressing the shutter in anticipation of the action.
These are one of Australia's worst failures of introduction being toxic from the time they transform from tadpoles. At the location of this shot at Boodjamulla in Queensland a lot of the lovely freshwater crocodiles die from eating them- as well as a lot of other animals and birds.
Introduced in 1935 with government approval, into the state of Queensland, for the purposes of controlling a couple of sugar cane pest beetles. They are native to Central & South America and it all started with 100 toads. They have now spread across Queensland and Northern Territory, into northern New South Wales and nudging into the north of Western Australia. Ironic that a biological control is being sought to control the original biological control species.
