A pair of Gelada baboons in the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia. BG is a mountain side in early morning light.
I seem to be getting some weird halos after converting to jpg, would appreciate any suggestions as to how to avoid that.

    Canon 1D MkIII, Canon 300 f/2.8; 1/800 @ f/4.5, ISO 200

    Thanks and best,

Great, great first post ! The lighting is superb, so is the low angle and that stare. Pity that the other one is not looking towards you.

Not a species seen often on the internet. First time I am seeing them outside of my Planet Earth disc. :-)

Ignacio - Great detail and I love the lighting. Amazing expression on the larger baboon, would like to see a minor head turn on the other.

Welcome to BPN. I like the light, colour, and detail, and just love the expression on the guy on the right. Well captured.

Thanks Alfred. I was already familiar with that thread. In fact the BG isn't sharpened, I usually only use selective sharpening (brush) with Nik Software, always after resizing and converting. Those halos seem to be produced by the converting itself; very little else was done o this shot (a little levels). BTW, I use PS CS4.

    Thanks again,

    Hi Ignacio

A very nice and different posting here. I like the strong, vibrant colours, however with the other baboon looking away I might, if possible, be tempted for a 'portrait' format?

Thank you Steve; actually I kind of like how the female (left) is looking at the male. The image is almost full frame, I will try a crop for the male only.

I will begin by saying this is something you do not see everyday, so much nicer than our baboons down south. They look almost unreal! Can I ask how you got to Ethiopia and did you get any wolf images?

Ken, traveling in Ethiopia is relatively straightforward and safe, as long as you have a good local guide/driver. Photo ops are great. I'm preparing a detailed trip report, will let you know when it's online on my website.
As for the wolves, I just posted an image - wonderful animals.

Send me a PM if you want more details.

    Best,
