    Default D300 question

    Hi

Could any Nikon users confirm whether the D300 can AF at f/8 or do Nikons work the same principle as Canon making only the top of the line pro bodies have this neat feature.

    Thanks :)

D300 AF works at all apertures, problem is that they may not lock onto focus if the light or subject contrast is low. So in effect it is as good as not working !!

Sorry, I should have said at a max. aperture of f/8. Yes, eg. 500/4 + 2x combo. Sorry, I am a bit vague. DOH to me. :)

It does focus, but slower with a lot of hunting.

The product manual for the 2x Teleconverter from Nikon states:
Autofocus cannot be used with the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II and TC-20E II attached with the
    following lenses:
    AF-S VR 200-400mm f/4G IF-ED AF-S 600mm f/4D II IF-ED
    AF-S 300mm f/4D IF-ED AF-S 600mm f/4D IF-ED
    AF-S 500mm f/4D II IF-ED AF-I 500mm f/4D IF-ED
    AF-S 500mm f/4D IF-ED AF-I 600mm f/4D IF-ED

    Hope this helps

Akos the AF is so slow its not really usable. On the Canon side the speed is not great but reasonable, not sure why Nikon is so slow !!

My D300 will AF ok with Nikon 1.7TC,but I will not use it for BIF. The 1.4 TC I use for BIF all the time on my Nikon 500.

This is all very interesting. It's true I cannot speak for the 2X but on my D300 with my 200-400VR using my 1.7TC I have no problems at all. It is all but as quick as my 1.4 so that I actually sold (traded) my 1.4 off. If the 2X is being a problem, get the 1.7X. Sharp as a tack and reasonably quick. I haqve no problem with lock-up at f/8 either.

The attachment was shot handheld on a rocking boat at ISO800 1/1600 f/6.7 using my 1.7TC at 1020mm :)
    Go figure.

    Good Hunting - Bill

I'm using the TC17 on my D300s and D700 for BIF and it worksw like a charm as long as the light is halfway decent and I use the center focus reticule.
