    Default Mallard at Sunset

What's the consensus on this image? I got a variety of exposures in this 5 shot sequence, metering on him and the water. I don't want a complete silhouette, and this seems like a good in-between. If this is too dark for you guys' liking, I have other, more technically correct images. So, fire away. :)

In PP, I lightened the head a bit and cropped for comp. I left everything else alone.

Hi Colin - maybe because it's "in-between", it doesn't work for me - it's either too dark or too light, but then I am way conservative. The composition is terrific, the bird's wing position is lovely, sharp, and nice bg.

I think I'd like it a lot if you'd lighten the eye a bit.

Colin, I am guessing this one was metered off the water and that causes the slight underexposure. Hence, maybe add some light for me.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking of just going to a complete silhouette with this one. I wasn't really sure what to do with it. I think the comments so far have helped me decide.

Might try B&W too if you can get some tones/textures - nice one - I love ducks!

Colin - this was framed well and sports a nice wing spread.

Just a tad dark for my tastes - not much. Would definitely try and lighten the eye a little.
Love the BG - Techs look good!!

    Thanks again....

Repost here with a WB adjustment. Which I could play with this more, need to go to work though. The possibilities are endless. =)

    Hi Colin,
Nice capture of this beautiful duck. The subject is just entering the past point of flying away from you; would suggest adding canvas to the right side of the frame and taking 1/4 from the left side...agree on lightening the area around the eye and the overall image...looking forward to your next one...

    Thanks, Gus!

My "next one" is posted on the Avian forum. Another shot from the sequence.

    Hi Colin

The one in the avian forum looks much better, do like the bird position of this one !! Can lighten the face just a bit on the avian one, for those guys you need to luck out and have the sun cover the entire bird at the correct angle !!

This is a good (great) illustration why is good to use the manual metering mode rather than Av, Tv or P !! As the bg changes you will have different exposures while the bird is in the same light. Going form sky to trees is even worse !!! Remember any under exposure is going to lead to noise and your image will not be looking its best !!!

Thanks for the tip on metering modes Alfred. That's too advanced for me in that setting though, one side of the pond was shady, the other side sunny. It was shooting on both sides and probably couldn't handle that in M mode.
