Nice composition Mark. Seems balanced with the chop and caligraphy. I wish for blacks in the butterfly though.

Your chop with the black negative spaces is not traditional but is very elegant and artistic here and I like it.

A comment on traditional chops - we should either be red letter with the negative spaces empty or showing the BG, or letters empty or showing the BG. So, letters negative or positive.

lovely etching effect Mark, I like how you've placed the butterfly in the frame. I think Dan's suggestion on black elements around/in the butterfly is a good one, to lend it a bit more form. A beautiful addition to the theme :)

    Mark,
I really like the simplicity of your image. Since simplicity and butterflies seem to be common themes in Asian art, I think this fits the theme perfectly.

Mark, I actually like the BF very much. The tone on tone looks nice, but agree w/ Dan it needs some black to stand up to that almost "neon" red. Maybe if you toned down the red and made the red border smaller it wouldn't feel so lost. Agree w/ Dan's comments regarding the chop. I like the vertical comp.

Mark, I like the subject for this theme, the vertical comp and the cutout look. I think I'd like to see Denise's
suggestion for framing so the frames are more complimentary with the subtle colors of the butterfly.:)

Mark I like your comp, chop, and lettering. Just have to agree a bit darker with the butterfly. I think we are all learning the "asian rules", and we will be even better next time.:)

Thanks all for viewing and comments. Appreciate it.

Dan and others, I started with a black (and red) butterfly and tried to maintain those colors. but I didn't like what was happening to the image in the directions of my personal pre-vision. When I tried the Notepaper filter in CS4, I saw the vision and proceeded with that. I again played with trying to maintain black in the image, but again it did not work for me. Maybe another image would have, but for this, I didn't feel it was there. I liked the monotoned image (wish I would have found it for that theme a few weeks ago! :( :D) so I worked from that and expanded the frame to give the vertical format of the final.

As for the chop block, I can modify that in the future. Didn't know there was a standard on that. Thanks for the info will so do.

But I do appreciate all the comments and maybe another image will find another vision.

I've attached the unprocessed original image for your continued enjoyment and information. Black and red would have been nice ... But ...

Now to start printing my wife's order of 500 monotoned butterfly relief notecards!!! :D :D
