Been revisiting Africa, specifically my bw. I did more midtone contrast the first time, but now am pushing more true blacks. I am approaching these as a more fine art market, and not detail in every square inch.

Hi Paul I like your approach, different and does look good !! Mid tones and shadows look excellent, might try lowering the light tones to expand the dynamic range a bit more !! Excellent !!

    Thanks guys,

Al, do you mean the highlights are blown to you? In print they are perfectly fine. If I darken them, I would be minimizing the dynamic range.

Excellent conversion, I would not change a thing if it were mine. TFS.

Like it just as it is Paul, with what appears a very soft sepia tone, a fine portrait!

Hi Paul, fine portrait and conversion,

Only suggestion I would make is to enhance the white areas which seem to be more of an off white .....especially around the eyes this will give more impact to the portrait .

I think this is a terrific conversion and I really like what you did creatively on this Paul. I would keep what you have intact.

Hi Paul, a very nice portrait of a true King. Sad to think these are more in danger than polar bears!

If it's not too cheeky Paul, can I ask the workflow? I have been trying to get something close to this but seem to be missing something?:confused:

    Thanks

    Thanks Steve,

    the layers are:

    BW layer,
Photo Filter- click color swatch, go to libraries, type quickly, warm grey, I use around warm grey 6-10
    Levels, pinched in highlights
    Brightness/contrast-+40 contrast globally
Levels-dropped shadows and midtones, mainly everywhere but face
Brightness/contrast-+100 contrast/inverted mask(black) and painted back in selected areas with 10% brush

    Hope this helps,
    Paul

Paul you have my attention, I love this image. Thanks for posting the workflow. Before digital I shot 80% of all my wildlife in Black and White.
