    Default Gentoo Penguin

Hi :) New to the forums and thought I would post this photo. Taken at Melbourne Aquarium, Australia. Was stoked at how the photo turned out but very annoyed I didnt get the tail :( Love photographing all birds and looking forward to seeing all your photos :) Taken with Canon 500D, f/5.6, 1/500, Iso 1600. Thanks!

Hi - A big warm welcome to the BPN family and to a Fellow melbournian (Not enough of us here)!!
You can post larger - up to 1024 on the longest side - will look better and make it easier to see the detail.

Nice first post - assume this was shot through the glass. Yes always best to get all of the subject you are shooting.
Looks a little dark on my screen - would lighten it a tad some additional sharpening could also be useful and maybe a little shadow/highlight.
Does this look any better to you??

Looking forward to seeing more!! Were do you go to photograph birds??

Absoloutely looks better lighter :) I go to a few places, 1000steps in ferntree gully (lyrebirds:)), grants picnic ground in the dandenongs, jells park to practice on ducks and will often go to the many wetlands around where I live (e.g. Koomba park).
Where do you go to photo birdies?

Western Treatment Plant - Newport Lakes - Koroit Creek - all over the place really - where ever I can get good opportunities - Went to the daintree late last year for a week - Really great spot that one.

A big warm welcome to our BPN family Jane...:) I like your first post captured through glass. This is my favorite bird...:) Your next one is going to illustrate the entire subject with no cuts...:D I agree with Mr. Peters on posting larger for better details. The repost puts it over the top...looking forward to more...and once again...welcome to the family...

Big Warm Welcome Jane !!! Aquariums can be fun and excellent images can be made !! I like your capture but sure wish you had the tail :)

Didn't see the exposure mode but would suggest going to manual for shooting in the tanks, bg varies and will over/under expose lots of images, this seems a little under !!

Excellent re post by Lance !!!

Welcome, everything has been covered by the pros - love the image and Lance put more light on the subject.

When shooting indoors, get latest reading from histogram and tweak, like Al said usually manual mode will add some stability due to changing conditions - well done.

I have only been shooting in manual mode since I got my camera (couple of months ago) but I havent quite worked out all the exposure stuff yet so i think I will have to read up on it :) Thanks for all the comments!
