    Default Northern Red Bishop

A close relative to my last post, this time from Senegal. I tried to desaturate the reds as much as possible without losing its original color, following advice from comments received, and retain some detail in the black.

Hi Ignacio, I like the pose. I think the head angle is good with nice eye contact. I see details in the blacks and red. I like the background. I might try a composition with a bit off the bottom. Say just above the out of focus brown/gray blade of vegetation. I also find the out of focus vegetation that merges with the bird a little distracting. With a little effort it could be removed if your ethics allow. Thanks for sharing.

This is a very striking bird, as was the Southern Bishop you posted earlier. Nice details in the black on this one, and the details are all razor sharp.

As you noted in your other post, reds like this can go off the charts very easily, so I wanted to see if I could brighten the subject
without clipping the red channel. Mostly curves adjustments and a bit also with selective color. (I cropped some off the bottom, but
    just my personal preference.)

Very nice photo. Welcome to the forum! ;)

Pose, perch and sharpness look great and David's repost makes it even better. If it were mine, I might remove the light grass in the BG underneath the tail.

Thanks for the comments and the repost; I particularly like the improvement in the BG, but there seems to be some banding right below and left of the bird? I have had that problem quite often; I thought it was mostly due to use of Shadows & Highlights in PS, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. What do you think?

Again, thanks for the welcoming comments.

Yes, you're right. When varying the luminance, as I did in the background here, you'll often get banding when working with low-res, 8-bit images. That can usually be avoided by working with full-size 16-bit images. Just have to watch out for banding to reappear when you convert to 8-bit (jpeg) and downsize for the web.

In my opinion, it is a great picture. Details, sharpness and color look superb.

I always try to avoid shadows/highlight filter because it can be tricky sometimes, specially if you do not make a precise selection with the mask tools. Here I used a different method based on the idea that different parts of the image should be processed in different ways (i.e, blacks needs a different processing than reds in this image and the background needs another one different processing job). In my repost I made a selection on the bird, created a new layer and deleted the background to work only in the bird. Then I used levels adjustment in the reds and another levels adjustment in the blacks. BG is untouched (well, I added another round of noise reduction). You can see more details of this method here (in spanish http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...391#post106391). Hope this helps

By the way, the image is superb

Thanks for taking the trouble, Juan. I'll keep this in mind. And thanks for the glossary, too.

    Saludos,
