On a rather gloomy morning yesterday, we watched many happy and beautiful scaups dive for shellfish. They were being quite successful. How they can digest these things, swallowed whole, I cannot fathom. The image is cropped and sharpened in LR only. C&C, please.

    Hi Wendell,
I like the capture with your subject in the center of frame. The catch is a plus and tells the story for this little hungry guy. A few point to consider...There is something funky about the background besides the noise factor, it looks wavy and not natural...I see a halo around the duck's head and the eye is kind of funny. Perhaps something happened in post processing, I don't know...the blacks and the whites are lacking details due to over cooking. You can try a levels adjustment but your whites are past 255, don't know how much details you can bring back unless you clone some texture in...looking forward to your next one...

    Hi Gus:

Appreciate you comments! Here is the original image, as it came out of the camera and with nothing done to it. Does this help to figure out what is wrong with it? (I've never attached a file this way after an initial post and hope i'm doing it right).

    Thanks,
    Wendell

    Hi Gus . . . again:

While in bed last night, trying to nurse a bad cold, it occurred to me that this image was emailed to my home computer -- before it was imported into Lightroom and worked on and posted (something I'd never done before). So, surely the email compression affected the image. You have a very sharp eye! I'm sorry that I did not realize what I had done before posting, for, of course, in that case I would have chosen a different image to present. I'll try to keep my wits about me in the future . . . increasingly difficult to do.

Hi Wendell I'm sure the emailing did something to the quality !! Great points by Gus !!

Crop wise the original is not all that far from what you need, would only crop a little top and bottom and wish I had more up front so the duck in not centered. Being able to see the rings makes it better !! btw for the eye you can darken the pupil and will appear sharper, all of them have funky looking pupils !! ... love the behavior !!!
