Hi Jeff,
I like the close up capture. You have a good head angle and sharp clear eye. The eye tells the story...:) I like the complimenting background...good show...
Wonderful detail. Love the color around the eye and at the base of the beak.
Like the close up capture. Excellent HA and eye contact.
HI Jeff - whites look good, Good ha and eye contact and nice detail.
Like it :)
Jeff - Nice sharp eye. You captured the details in the whites as I might have imagined given your emphasis on exposure. You don't mention what metering mode you used, or whether there was any exposure compensation. I'd be curious to know. (Would also be useful to know if it was full-frame, so we might get an idea what the camera was thinking -- if exposure wasn't set manually. If full-frame, with this much white in the image, I might imagine a negative EC.)
Bill, I use - Eval Metering/AF/Al Servo the majority of the time. This was manual mode.
Note that f/5.6 @ 1/2500 given ISO 400 meets the Sunny 16 rule and it was a sunny morning. I Think that is right. Let's see the base setting for sunny 16 at ISO/400 = f/16 @ 1/500 about right?
I might be wrong here, but you can see that this setting would be about correct for sunny conditions. Of course, there are variables but this manual setting for ISO 400 worked for me. Remember, the BG was a darker gray to help the meter process the scene. I did crop about 25% of the picture away to focus on the head only - hope this helps.

Hey Jeff,
Love the eye and the neutral BG! Might try boosting the saturation in the yellows, would really make this one pop!
