First time playing with slow shutterspeed and zooming out at the same time - remembered while I was having some fun shooting roses this afternoon and remembered the technique and decided to give it a try. Obviously not to be used very often but fun. No idea whats causing the black dots - don't think its dirt as its not showing up on any other images
Hi, Welcome to BPN
Good job with having the rose as the anchor point while the rest got zoom. I like how all the lines are leading to the center of the rose. The black dots seem like they didn't get the zoom effect, but hard to tell since the picture is a bit small. You can post image up to 1024 pixels on the horizontal or 800 pixels on the vertical (with size not more than 200k) here. I would move a bit to the right so the rose would face more directly at you, and also might step back so I can include all the petals.
Also it is helpful to give info about the tech, like shutter speed, f number and ISO.
Hi - A big warm welcome to the BPN family - we do use real names on the forum - please send a PM to Alfred Forns so he can change your username for you.
As Thanaboon has mentioned including all the technical details will help everyone offer assistance as they can see what you are doing.
Do like the effect and we often have assignments based on similar concepts.
Gus is our resident Flower expert - I will let him offer his expert opinion.
Looking forward to seeing more :)
EXIF Data for those interested
Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.3
Aperture: f/32.0
Focal Length: 200 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -1/3 EV
I initally tried being a bit further out so the rose was originally fully in the frame but this version came out better - being zoomed in closer picked up more detail in the outer petals that the other copy didnt have. Yes I should have cropped and centered it a bit more :)
Hi Blue Rose,
A nice warm welcome to our BPN family...:) First things first, I don't have the pleasure of knowing your actual name. :D As Mr. Lance Peters stated, you need to send Mr. Alfred Forns a private message so that he can replace your handle with your name. When you post, you can resize your images to 1024 in the horizontal X 800 in the vertical, and the total image size being 200KB max. and with full EXIF data so that we can better help you excel in your photography.
Your base image is good, being your first zoom blur. The composition is too tight in frame, meaning that portions of your outer petals were cut off, and the flower is too centered in frame. You need to add more canvas on all the four sides, especially on the bottom and right sides of the frame in order to offset your subject from the center. I would suggest for your next zoom blur especially with flowers as a subject, to open up your aperture setting to perhaps an f/5.6 or an f/4 or wider depending on the lens being used, so that the background can be diffused and blurred even further and it will eliminate the vertical cut lines emitting from the center. You did not include your shutter speed in you EXIF data. The shutter speed need to be lower than the focal length of your lens in this case. The base image looks a little flat, needing a slight saturation and contrast boost, in order to make your lady pop...these are just a few point to consider...once again welcome to our BPN family, and I will be looking forward to your next one...:)
By the way, if you have any questions or not sure on a certain procedure or technique, please feel free to PM me; I will be more than happy to help...
From the zooming point of view you want to keep the center of the flower at the center for best results in this case, also hesitating a bit at first then zooming will give you a more recognizable center and still lots of zooming effect.
With these is just making lots of them and do check the LCD for effects, not easy to tell with the little screen but does help !! ... color wise reds always need to be desaturated since the camera blows them out all on its own !! ... btw do pm me a name so I can make the update !!! Excellent first image and looking forward to the next !!
Hi Everyone - thanks for the kind words and encouragement - sorry I havent replied earlier - last week was my first back at work after the holidays and it was MADLY busy!
My shutter speed was 1/30th of a sec (if I work the numbers out correctly). I will experiment further taking your comments in mind - it might be easier with a flower that is a little tidier around the edges than a rose. And possibly not red so its not so oversaturated. There is a monthly competition in another group I am on and the subject is "red" and I admit I did possibly overtweak the colour saturation trying to make the red stand out *sigh* first time I tried to play with a strongly red image. Lots to learn :)
